NASA Report Top House Plants

April 30, 2014

House plants are the ultimate in functional decorating. Some well-placed greenery can not only brighten a space but also purify the air and they’re also helpful in creating a more relaxing, restful ambiance in any room. We know that spending time in nature is linked to reduced stress levels and relieves tension. In fact, in a 2008 study, Dutch researchers found that hospital patients with indoor plants in their rooms reported lower stress levels than patients without them.

That’s why we’ve rounded up beautiful houseplants that are easy to take care of and effective at increasing oxygen and clearing out toxins for cleaner breathing air. (Some were listed in the top 10 best air-purifiers in a study of houseplants by NASA scientists!). So try adding one to your bedroom or office space for a little dose of zen.Picture3

Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design

April 22, 2014

ImageLEED is transforming the way we think about how buildings and communities are designed, constructed, maintained and operated across the globe.

LEED, or Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design, is a green building certification program that recognizes best-in-class building strategies and practices. To receive LEED certification, building projects satisfy prerequisites and earn points to achieve different levels of certification. Prerequisites and credits differ for each rating system, and teams choose the best fit for their project.

Each rating system groups requirements that address the unique needs of building and project types on their path towards LEED certification. Once a project team chooses a rating system, they’ll use the appropriate credits to guide design and operational decisions.

One of these is Interior Design and Construction. That’s where we fit in! If you have not considered us or our services before, have you considered the tax breaks higher LEED scores get you? Have you considered what a higher score can do for your marketing? We provide a great product with not just visual benefits (although its always a plus).  Ask us today what we can do for your LEED needs, whether you are a newbie or an old pro, we can help.

Green Means Green

April 15, 2014

ImageEver wonder why when you walk into a bank there are plants? You’re probably thinking to yourself ” I’ve never noticed before” or maybe even the more common ” I’ve never even thought about it”. If that is the case, that’s exactly what they were counting on! Studies have shown that businesses with live plants where their consumers can see them have been linked to words like ” high end” or “classy ” therefore people are more willing to put out that high dollar. Think of the last “fancy” dinner you went to. Think of their ambiance, were there plants?

Likewise, home buyers say the same of homes for sale with live plants in it, commonly revering to them as ” homey” or ” comfortable” allowing the prospective seller to aquire more money on the sale. Places like Coach, Nordstrom, and Bloomingdales are a few retailers who have stumbled on to this little trick as well, making their space and thusly their product ” worth it”. So, if you are looking for that little bump in ratings or a bump in your ” worth it” column, just remember GREEN in your space MEANS GREEN in your pocket.

Sick and Depressed Elderly

April 8, 2014

ImageIf life was a fairy tale, plants are like little green fairy godmothers that help sick and depressed people every day. Not medicinal plants, but everyday, run-of-the-mill, indoor plants. They are in hospitals, assisted living facilities and nursing homes all across the United States making life better. Let’s shine a light on one example:

As the population ages, those who once lived independently are often moved to nursing homes or communities with infrastructure to take care of them in case of health problems. Some have to give up homes they’ve inhabited for 30 years or more, complete with beloved gardens. But if care is taken, and they are allowed to bring their plants, or given new ones, they feel more in control of the new environment and the shock of the transition is buffered. The plants themselves and the act of caring for them can help avoid depression, and encourage emotional expression.

Plants have many admirable attributes. The way they clean the air in a space is a scientific marvel, and their beauty alone would be reason enough to have them around. Somehow though, the effect on the human spirit is their most moving quality. Life is not a fairy tale, but perhaps the universe wants us to believe in fairy godmothers after all.

Energy In A Can VS. Green Energy

April 4, 2014

ImageThere are so many energy drinks out there that say they can do amazing things (Give you wings?), or that will eliminate that 2:30 lull in your afternoon. What if you could get all those benefits without pumping your body full of unnatural substances? Studies have been done to prove that putting live plants in your work and home space can increase productivity, increase a peaceful feeling and can increase that natural ” no 2:30 feeling” buster ,oxygen!

Most energy drinks contain between 70 and 200mg of caffeine per can.

  • An 8oz cup of drip coffee contains 110-150mg
  • 65-125mg/cup of percolated coffee.
  • 40-80 mg for instant coffee.
  • Dr. Pepper delivers 41mg.
  • A can of Coke provides 34mg.
  • A full can of RockStar has 160mg.

At Inside Plants there is a firm belief in the natural and holistic energy. As a matter of fact, cancer patients who were exposed to green live plants during their course of radiation therapy the patients experienced less side effects and needed 17% less treatment to show signs of remission.

Let’s get back on the natural path and get that green in your space today!

Don’t be afraid of the Living Wall

April 1, 2014

Solar Decathlon 2013A living wall: the idea sounds right out of a bad sixties horror movie! But actually, these vertical planters, being used by eco-friendly homeowners, high-end interior designers, and companies wanting a break from the average cubicle, are more of a dream than a nightmare. Want to learn more? Read on!

There is science that shows having greenery in a home or office improves air quality, productivity and even your mood. If plants are good for you, why not bring in a lot of them? Sometimes in small spaces, that can be impractical. Urban planners, when avoiding sprawl, go vertical. The design world has realized that plants climbing the walls can happen indoors, look great, and be unique to a space. Here’s how it’s done:

Planter trays: These trays can be mounted on the walls of a home or office and then styled with plants to create the lush appearance of a vertical garden.

Freestanding Dividers: Dividers are useful to compartmentalize a larger area with plants, such as dividing functions of a collaborative work space. Having dividers that are friendly and full of indoor plants enhances an office as opposed to the dull choppy nature of the standard cubicle.

High Style & High Tech: Lest homeowners think this is some sort of dowdy office trend, note that the college age designers of practically every home at the 2013 US Department of Energy’s Solar Decathalon included a living wall in their elegant, futuristic models. Step into your own green future with a living wall in your home or office.
