Taking care of succulents

coribouquet2Lately rooms in home décor magazines are accented with cool little plants known as succulents.  They are all the rage, and for good reason! They’re elegant and can be used for everything from centerpieces to lining a walkway.  Different varieties of succulents are so beautiful that Palm Springs florist My Little Flower Shop uses them in bridal bouquets.

What’s the best part about succulents?  The smaller “entry level” plants won’t break the bank and caring for them doesn’t require a master’s degree in horticulture.

Here’s what they need:

  • Turn on some light!  Succulents need light, but don’t put them in direct sun or they will burn.
  • Water carefully.  The leaves of succulents take in and hold water, so be sure not to overwater.  A spray bottle is your best bet, and make sure the plant has “dried” before watering again.  The excellent blog Succulents and Sunshine offers are great explanation.
  • Prune and watch it grow!  For less experienced plant parents, the pruning shears seem scary, but keeping your succulents neat and tidy is essential to making it thrive.  Fiskars offers helpful advice on this, and great tools for everything from gardening to crafts.

So now you’re ready to set up your container garden.  Get your hands dirty, and have fun with your succulents!
